On May 20, 1942, an unusual four-engine bomber of Russian design and manufacture appeared out of the clouds over Dundee.

It skirted low over the city before coming to land at RAF Tealing.

The very important passenger the crew were escorting was Vyacheslav Molotov, the Russian Foreign Minister and Deputy of the State Committee of Defence.

A volatile history, period military bases and international influence.

Wartime Defences of the Tay Estuary

From Buddon Ness to Fife Ness the Tay Estuary has been no stranger to conflict over many centuries from Viking marauders to French and Russian forces intending invasion, but it is the 20th century conflicts of the First and Second World Wars that will be the primary focus in this book.

Most of the First World War was fought in mainland Europe, but prior to the declaration, the Germans had built up a powerful fleet of warships and Scotland’s east coast with its ports and harbours was vulnerable to attack from the sea.
